The Webbed Robin at your fingertips

The Webbed Robin

The Webbed Robin (http://www.webbedrobin.demon.co.uk) is the excellent unofficial Wrexham FC web-site. It offers a massive service to fans: news, gossip, information, details about the club, the players and anything and everything else to do with WFC. In future editions of Red Passion we will pick out the best bits. In Issue 1 we have asked a computer specialist to take a peep at the site...

Comprehensive and user-friendly

These Web pages provide access to a comprehensive range of information through a simple user-friendly interface. Links to all of the necessary information appear on the opening page. There are automatic e-mail links and a connection to their own listserver.

Travel information is particularly well done. The maps do not take up much memory and are easy to download, and there is an extremely useful link to Railtrack's interactive timetable and planner.

Though some might say that the lack of background graphics reduces the colour impact of the pages, the Web managers have obviously made every effort to minimise the download delays associated with the more colourful sites. This tactic is also evident in their photo album where they use thumbnail pictures as the links to larger images.

There are two areas where improvements could be made. Firstly, the menu bar at the top of the page is very convenient but other pages (eg. the Publications Page) could do with their own menu bars as well. Secondly, the URL could also be simplified. Clearly, they are dependent on the University of the West of England website, so the URL cannot be shortened. However, the part of the URL with the tilde (~) should be altered, if at all possible. This could probably be done by re-naming the directory in which the Wrexham files are stored.

Every effort should be made to ensure that it is as descriptive as possible. It should conform to the WYSIWYG principle: when you look at the URL, you should be able to say that "what you see is what you get".
