'Croydon with palm trees'

"The Exiles": Nomadic Wrexham fans

Nomadic Wrexham fans

No.8 – Simon Shuker

Current home?
Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

What's it like?
A very hot country with very little oil and a BOOMING economy.

Paint us a word picture of the place…
East meets West under the Arab sun. Very modern (30 years ago everyone rode round on camels; now the locals have Mercs and four-wheel drives). Someone once described it as 'Croydon with palm trees'.

Good things about it?
NO TAX, very little rain or Scousers. It's wet (booze) which is taxed! Cheap cars, petrol, clothes, etc. NO TAX.

Bad things about it?
Very racist - too many foreigners (Arabs and Asians from the sub-continent). Too far from the Racecourse.

What's the weather like?
Hot - ranges from about 80 in the winter to 120 in the summer. Also very humid in the summer, so after a walk of 20 paces you need to change your shirt.

What's the local food like?
Because of the diverse nationalities living here, everything is available from McDonalds to a 'Delhi belly' curry. Arabic food tends to be mainly fish and rice.

Why are you there?
To make money. I have an interior contracting company specialising in hotel furnishing and the locals are building like it's going out of fashion (5,000 new hotel bedrooms before the Year 2000).

Are you happy to be there?
Yes.

Tell us one bizarre thing about the place you're exiled in…
As gambling is illegal in the Islamic faith, at race meetings you are given a free-to-enter ticket to guess the winners of the races, with the winner (drawn out of a hat, if there's more than one) getting Dhs30k (about £5), but that does not count as gambling.

What are your Wrexham connections?
I was born in Wrexham and my parents have a shop in the People's Market selling health foods.

How often do you get back to see Wrexham?
I saw the Luton game a year-and-a-bit ago, but the previous league game I saw was in January 1994 v Orient (I saw a couple of pre-season friendlies in 1996).

Favourite current player?
Phil Hardy.

Favourite Wrexham player of all time?
Joey Jones.

Earliest Wrexham memory?
Seeing them play Burnley in the cup in 1974/5.

How do you keep in touch with WFC news and results?
Through the Internet.

What are your current views about Wrexham - the club and the team?
The Luton game I saw disappointed me, as I remember we used to play with more passion.

Any thoughts about the future?
I hope (like every year) for promotion and to one day see Wrexham as the premier club in the UK, not just Wales.
