......on the road......

No.10 - Oxford

- Journey there? At £10 I decided to use the Away
Travel club and go down by coach. On the way we had a general knowledge quiz and the
chance to talk to some of the Racecourse faithful including my good friend Ben Jackson,
who decided to go along with me.
- The town? From what I saw of Oxford, it just looked
like Borras Park on a very busy day, with a main road going past the ground and many shops
on each side.
- Pre-match goings-on? Not much. When the bus arrived,
many of the supporters went to the pub on the corner of the road leading to the ground (I
cant remember what it was called). I decided to visit the club shop with Ben, before
heading towards a fast food outlet.
- Ground? I forgot to bring my calculator to help
count the number of different stands! I came up with 11, but Im sure I left one or
two out. The away end was an uncovered terrace. Fortunately, the weather was dry.
- Admission price?
- The game? After two injuries in the first 30
minutes, I had my doubts as to whether we could maintain our 1-0 lead, but Danny Allsopp
got two and Darren Ferguson got the fourth. The first away win I have seen since the Welsh
Cup final in 1995.
- Our fans? Went into this match looking for a draw or
a low-score victory. Choirmaster Jacko wasnt on form, but he did inspire our
supporters to sing a little during the first half. In the second, we needed no
encouragement to start singing about Oxford keeper Lundin.
- Their fans? Seemed very quiet compared to other fans
we have seen this season. I suppose that, with the prospect of being relegated for the
second season running, they wouldnt be very happy.
- Post-match goings-on? Had a long walk back to the
coach, which was parked about half a mile away. We found out that Chester had lost 7-1 to
Brighton, and therefore looked more likely to go down, so mixed emotions (we hate them so
much we dont want them to go down!)
Journey back? Went very quietly considering we had just won 4-1 away. We
arrived back in Wrexham around 8.30pm - plenty of time to get home in time for Match of
the Day. Jack Parkinson
