FIn my last piece, I criticised WFC for its lack of toilet paper in the Gents (and possibly the Ladies?) conveniences under the Sainsburys stand, other than a soggy lump pushed behind a pipe that was of no use to anyone. Im pleased to report that this has now been rectified and if you venture to use these facilities in the near future you should find a fresh supply hanging on a holder. To be fair to the club, I noticed this at the Merthyr game which was after the last column was written but before publication, so credit is due; however, I shouldnt really have had to bring this matter up in the first place. One only hopes that whoever is responsible for servicing the toilets keeps on top of this situation so the problem doesnt recur.
As I write this colunm on St Davids Day, it seems appropriate to mention one or two things that have been suggested to me recently. One person I was discussing the recent Wales v France A rugby match with commented on the row of Welsh flags behind the Kop and expressed disappointment that they were not retained for Wrexham matches. Now, I dont actually know, but I suppose they may well have been the property of the WRU; however it would be a nice touch and a relatively inexpensive way of adding to the atmosphere. Other suggestions that have been put include Welsh Anthems. We already have our own version of Men of Harlech, but what about the players running out to Catatonias International Velvet. This, I understand, is something the Welsh FA are considering adopting as their theme tune. Daffodils are the national flower of Wales. What about planting a sea of them on the banking at the back of the Kop and up the side of the path from the Crispin Lane entrance to the Kop? This would brighten up the place and provide a spectacular entrance to the ground during the springtime.
Congratulations to WFC for repeating the Kid for a quid initiative and also the special deal for women supporters in the PGS. What a shame, however, that it coincided with the worst home performance of the season. I suspect that not many new supporters will result from that game.
For the future the club would be well advised to copy many of its opponents and try a student discount scheme, offering child or discounted prices to NUS card holders. Wrexham is growing as a student town and this is one market that we should be trying to tap into. It has been argued that many students dont stay in Wrexham after graduation, and this may well be true, but the fact remains that there is constant roll over of students and new ones arrive to replace those departed. It should also be remembered that the town also has a large 6th Form based at Yale, catering largely for local students.
