Division Two

What's going on?

All the runners and riders - form guide for the coming season:

BOURNEMOUTH: Last season: They were tipped by many for success after they only missed out on the play-offs on the last day the previous year. However, it was not to be and they languished in mid-table dropping off into the bottom half later on. This season: Expect much of the same. Their style of football isn't pretty and their squad is not good enough as a whole. Key players: Robinson/Jorgensen. Finish last season: 16th Predicted finish this season: 15th.

BRENTFORD: Last season: They were one of the surprise teams to be pushing for the play-offs but then they went through an incredibly long poor spell. It was just as well they had already got 50 points before the unwanted run started. This season: I don't think they'll struggle too much but they won't be as close to the play-offs at Christmas as they were last season. Key players: Rowlands/ Owusu. Finish last season: 17th Predicted finish this season: 14th.

BRISTOL CITY: Last season: After a very poor start City came to life in the second half of the season. They had a brilliant home record to boast as well. This season: Despite changes off the pitch, I think that they will carry on from where they left off. Danny Wilson has taken over a very good squad so he needn't worry too much about rebuilding. Key players: Murray/Thorpe. Finish last season: 8th Predicted finish this season: 3rd.

BRISTOL ROVERS: Last season: Very unlucky not to reach the play-offs after an awful run in. With 10 games left, automatic promotion was more than a possibility. This season: Will again be there or thereabouts - who wouldn't with the strike partnership they possess? Key players: Cureton/Roberts. Finish last season: 7th Predicted finish this season: 5th.

BURY: Last season: The long ball merchants looked awful until Preece and Redmond took over the joint-caretaker and player-manager jobs. They have worked wonders and now Bury even pass the ball about. This season: Might prove to be one of the surprise teams. They have a young squad and a lot of talented forwards. Key players: Kenny/Littlejohn. Finish last season: 15th Predicted finish this season: 8th.

CAMBRIDGE: Last season: Relied heavily on the front two of Benjamin and Butler. Did well to survive the drop. This season: Without either of the front two that started last season, the drop seems a dead cert. Key players: Marshall/Ashbee. Finish last season: 19th Predicted finish this season: 24th.

COLCHESTER: Last season: It looked as though they were going to do far better than the critics predicted but did drop into the dogfight in the end. This season: You can't really tell. They might do as well as last season, but if someone snaps up Lua Lua that could really hit them. Key players: Lua Lua/McGavin. Finish last season: 18th Predicted finish this season: 22nd.

LUTON: Last season: Started off very brightly and their choice of pacey forwards was a threat to anyone. Poor away from home. This season: Will probably be a nothing season in terms of they're not good enough to go up but too good to go down. Key players: Taylor/George. Finish last season: 13th Predicted finish this season: 13th.

MILLWALL: Last season: Another one of the surprise teams but they weren't quite good enough to make it in the end. This season: If they hang on to their young players they'll be up there again. Key players: Harris/Ifill. Finish last season: 5th Predicted finish this season: 7th.

NORTHAMPTON: Last season: Took a while to get going but when they did they stormed through into Division 3's third promotion spot and deservedly won promotion. This season: They've been here before and know what to expect. Some handy signings have been made and they should survive. Key players: Gabbiadini/Forrster. Finish last season: 3rd (Division 3) Predicted finish this season: 12th.

NOTTS COUNTY: Last season: How do they do it? They say the table doesn't lie but I'm not so sure. County are never worthy of a top-eight finish. This season: Let's hope the league table is a bit more truthful - they're awful! Key players: Ward/Dyer. Finish last season: 9th Predicted finish this season: 21st.

OLDHAM: Last season: After an abysmal start they kept improving and improving but eventually finished in a safe mid-table spot. This season: They won't get near the play-offs but should still do reasonably well. Key players: Kelly/Duxbury. Finish last season: 14th Predicted finish this season: 10th.

OXFORD: Last season: Their defence wasn't great but it doesn't help when you're fielding a keeper who's so bad that he is occasionally substituted at half time for tactical reasons. This season: Another struggle looks set to be heading their way. Key players: Powell/Murphy. Finish last season: 20th Predicted finish this season: 18th.

PETERBOROUGH: Last season: Barry Fry's team looked like they might not even make the play-offs at one stage, but they scraped in and were efficient enough in the end. This season: Like Northampton they've been there before and might even avoid the relegation battle all together. Key players: Farrell/Lee. Finish last season: 5th (Division 3) Predicted finish this season: 20th.

PORT VALE: Last season: Carried on where they left off the previous season - on a downward slope. This season: Might carry on again and get some hurtful hammerings off a few teams. Key players: Brammer/Cummings. Finish last season: 23rd (Division 1) Predicted finish this season: 11th.

READING: Last season: After a dreadful start, they became one of a number of clubs to produce a fine vein of form after Christmas. This season: If they can produce what they did in the second half of the season consistently they will be a threat this time around. Key players: Caskey/Butler. Finish last season: 10th Predicted finish this season: 2nd.

ROTHERHAM: Last season: Only missed out on the Third Division title on the last day of the campaign when they only managed a draw at home to Swansea who pipped them. This season: Might struggle, I haven't seen enough of them to judge them properly but they struggled last time they played at this level. Key players: Pollitt/Fortune-West Finish last season: 2nd (Division 3) Predicted finish this season: 23rd.

STOKE: Last season: Kept improving under new boss Thordarsson, playing an attractive passing style of football they are turning the Britannia into a fortress. This season: Should continue to progress and this season could well be their best chance to return to Division 1. Key players: Ward/O'Connor. Finish last season: 6th Predicted finish this season: 1st.

SWANSEA: Last season: Clinched the Third Division title on the final day of the season and thoroughly deserved it. This season: Like Cardiff did last season, Swansea could struggle. I think that with the players they've got they stand more chance of survival than Cardiff ever did. Key players: Freestone/Watkin. Finish last season: 1st (Division 3) Predicted finish this season: 16th.

SWINDON: Last season: Spent almost the whole season routed to the foot of the Division 1 league ladder. They never looked like winning, never mind getting themselves out of trouble. This season: With the ever-improving Division 2, Swindon, like Bury, Oxford and Bristol City last season, should be in for a real shock. Key players: Carrick/ Grazioli. Finish last season: 24th (Division 1) Predicted finish this season: 17th.

WALSALL: Last season: Despite picking up some rather creditable results, Walsall just slid away at the death. Unlucky, even though they never deserved to go up in the first place. This season: I've just got a feeling that all three relegated teams will continue to struggle despite dropping down a division - so they can watch out! Key players: Padula/Matias. Finish last season: 22nd (Division 1) Predicted finish this season: 9th.

WIGAN: Last season: Made a good job of messing up when all they had to do was keep their cool. Missed out on the chance of promotion more than once in one season! This season: Of course they're going to be there or thereabouts - again, but they are the sort of side who could mess it all up, again! Key players: Redfearn/Liddell. Finish last season: 3rd Predicted finish this season: 4th

WREXHAM: Last season: Were too close to the drop-zone for comfort, but only PNE and Burnley picked up more points in their last 23 games. This season: If they are ever going to get out of this division, or make the play-offs, then surely this is the time. Key players: Faulconbridge/Blackwood. Finish last season: 11th Predicted finish this season: 6th.

WYCOMBE: Last season: Raised a few eyebrows as they did better than expected. At one point they actually looked strong candidates for a play-off place. This season: Might not be able to produce that form and do worse than people will now expect. Key players: Devine/McSporran. Finish last season: 12th Predicted finish this season: 19th.
