Hot shots unlimited:
This month I have decided to take a look at the early frontrunners for the Golden Boot Award:
JAMIE CURETON (READING): After his strike partner Jason Roberts left for West Brom in the summer for £2m, Cureton soon
followed and headed for Reading. Before he even played for Reading, I felt that he was bargain of
the season at £250,000. A real finisher with a bit of flair, he has already paid back the price tag - and Reading are now reaping the profits and
rewards (9/10).
SIMON HAWORTH (WIGAN): Although Haworth cost more than twice as much as
Cureton, it has also proved money well spent. After leaving Coventry, he has scored consistently over the past two seasons. A real talent with the
ability that you pray for in a striker - creating something out of nothing. He doesn't score many tap-ins (9/10).
MARK STALLARD (NOTTS COUNTY): A decent striker in a poor team. Isn't renowned for being prolific and, after starting well last season, he soon went off the boil - and I think that might be the same case this time around (6/10).
MARTIN BUTLER (READING): Another snip for Reading at the tail-end of last season, costing £750,000 from Cambridge. A
powerful centre-forward who likes to run with the ball and can shoot from distance. Along with Cureton, this
£1m strikeforce could tear the division apart (8/10).
MARK ROBINS (ROTHERHAM): Has started off the season in fine form with some
good goals. I think that Rotherham need a good striker to partner him as they have now parted company with battering-ram Leo Fortune-West just as the
partnership was starting to blossom. Robins has a knack of scoring important goals (6/10).
HECTOR SAM (WREXHAM): Sam certainly blows hot and cold. He's quick, powerful and runs at players with a purpose. You always feel he could produce something out of the ordinary. His finishing could do with a bit of work, and he spends a bit too much time on the floor; that's something he will get used to coping with in the English game (7/10)
