On the KOP... With Matt WedderKOPP

Hi and welcome to another thrilling edition of On the Kop… This time we’ll be hearing from an Eton graduate who'll be teaching us how to make an oboe out of a racoon and Terry Smith will also be explaining exactly how he mixed up Manchester City and Chester City - and why he wants to leave Chester. After that we’ll be asking ex-Wrexham stars Craig Skinner and Mike Lake just what they think the top hair cuts for autumn will be…

OK, I don’t really have much to say this edition. I would tell you my opinion on the recent matches but I guess that’s probably been done about 18 times this edition already. Instead, I will talk about the Walsall game specifically - not the match itself but the goings-on off the field, or more specifically the ballboys. I don't want this to sound nasty, and I don't want the ballboys to take personal offence, but I would like to comment on the general standard of ballboying at the Racecourse - which I think is a legitimate issue to talk about. I think (in comparison to other grounds I’ve visited) our ballboys are poor. I read recently that the ballboys were, allegedly, costing the team up to four minutes a match. Four minutes can be a hell of a long time and we all know how much damage can be done in a short space of time (Bournemouth game). That four minutes could in fact turn one point into three. How does someone go about being a ballboy? What training is given? Does the club just ask children if they want to see a football match for free?

So Big Bri is out for 6 weeks and the current debate is who will partner Steve Roberts in central defence. Flynn is looking at a loan signing but why not give Danny Williams a shot at it? That would save forking out even more wages. Another interesting thing that was pointed out on the wrexham@topica.com mailing list is that we’ve won all our games without Carey in the team. I know Brian has lost some of his pace and is maybe a little slow on the turn, but he is by far one of the strongest defenders in our division. Speaking of the defence, why play Ridler at full-back when Emad is available? It’s been suggested that Emad is not at full fitness - but he looked simply awesome when he came on against Walsall. I hope he is given a decent chance and not left festering in the Reserves just because he’s not been there as long as other players.

I know we’re poorly placed in the league but I don’t think it’s a true reflection of our team’s ability. Let’s all get behind the lads (especially at home) and will them forward and up the league.

Last season I wrote in my column about the size of the squad. I thought it had been trimmed a great deal - but still looks huge after more recent signings. I’d be interested to know what the club’s wage bill is per week.

Oh well, must be off and find things to do that avoids helping the missus muck out the stables or spend quality time watching equestrianism!

Keep the Faith, Matt Wedderkopp
