No.14 - David Walsh

1. Where do you live?

I live in Dublin, the capital of Ireland. I live close to the centre of the city. Dublin is a huge place, but I am near enough to walk home from the city at night so I save a fortune on taxis! Just around the corner from me is the National Stadium, which is the home of amateur boxing in Ireland, and not too far away is St.James' Gate which is the home of Guinness, and St.Patrick's Cathederal, one of the city's two Anglican cathedrals.

2. What's it like?

Dublin has got to be seen to be believed. In the last ten years, the place has become so cosmopolitan, with people from every nationality living here. Anyone can literally walk into a job here, with graduates in every sector in demand. There are even recruitment drives taking place in Angelsey and Gynnedd to find staff. The population is very young as well (half the population in Ireland is 30 or under). The town is full of old buildings, especially Georgian, which have most of their original features, and a wealth of construction sites that show off the 'Celtic Tiger' economy of growth.

3. Good things about it?

It's a happening town with no end of new people and opportunities for the right people; there is always something on, and the city has grown in prominence.

4. Bad things about it?

The town is messy, and the roads and paths are bumpy and ragged in some spots. Litter can be bad as well, and drink is expensive!

5. Tell us one bizarre thing about it?

The former chimney stack of the old Jameson whisky distillery is now a viewing post and a restaurant.

6. What's the weather like?

Today it's beautiful! Pretty much like the UK for the most part, but it doesn't get as extreme in terms of hot and cold.

7. Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I have lived up in Dublin all my life. I used to live in the Coombe, a well known area of the city, but moved form there 18 years ago. I actually live just a half mile from there now. I live at home with my parents and brother and sister; house prices on Ireland are monsterous.

8. What do you do for a job?

I am a civil servant by day, and I also do some DJ work at the weekends.

9. Why are you a Wrexham fan?

Because I hate Chester! I don't think supporting a team is a matter of choice, but a vocation as such, and I am drawn to Wrexham in this way; much as we like or dislike people for intangible reasons.

10. What are your Wrexham connections, if any?

My grandmother was born in Wales, near Llannfairpg and, although I don't have any close relatives in Wales, a few family-tree enquiries have shown up long-lost cousins in Swansea, Newport and Birkenhead.

11. How do you keep in touch with Wrexham FC news and results?

I am reliant on Radio Wales and Teletext for news; otherwise I try to see if any news filters into the local papers. If we get on telly on the league review show, or on Sky, then I am in Heaven.

12. Favourite current player?

I always had a thing for Barry Hunter as he was such a polished player who was as good as anyone in any team, but I reckon it would be…Mark McGregor. Oh yeah, Brian Carey too if he's reading, and Phil Hardy too.

13. What are your current views about Wrexham - the club and the team?

It's a pity that money doesn't seem to come through as much as at other clubs, or maybe it has to be spent elsewhere eg. the youth scheme. Lovely looking stand - hope to see it soon. The team seems stale though, without the excitement of the last few years. It will be interesting to see how we counter this.

14. What position do you feel Wrexham will finish in Division 2 this season?

I reckon about 10th, but no doubt I shall be proved wrong, and I hope it will be better than this obviously.

15. Any thoughts about this season?

This is a make or break season for the current regime; I can't see another mid-table season and a cup run being the requisite for the new season in 2001. The club has got to move on, and not going backwards will not be enough to bring in fans to the Racecourse.
