Unatmospheric Aber
Rich Williams sits in his armchair - and summarises the Aberystwyth-Wrexham game as shown live on BBC Wales
Pre-match background: Most of our games in the FAW Premier Cup involve treks around the valleys of West Wales, but this time we come to Park Avenue home of Aberystwyth Town, one of the more developed clubs in the League of Wales. Flynnie was involved in the recent ‘Home Masters’ football tournament, where he managed Wales to victory. He also played well and I wouldn’t be surprised if he played tonight! (Joke). The game was live on BBC Wales 2, and BBC Choice for people with Sky Digital. Conditions: Not the best; the pitch looked in a bit of a state as well. Selection: Walsh, Roche, Hardy, Ridler, Carey, Gibson, Barrett, Williams, Russell, Sam, Bouanane. Tactics: Flynn’s finally came to his senses, playing Emad on the left wing instead of left-back. Ebb and flow: We started the match a bit like Saturday, a bit sluggish and a bit inert. Gibson and Bouanane were reasonably good on the wings, but upfront Sam and Russell didn’t cause Aberystwyth enough problems. Aberystwyth always looked a bit dangerous, with Glyndwr Hughes, Gari Lewis and Paul Evans in attack. Atmospherics: It wasn’t a bad turnout for the likes of Aberystwyth, but the atmosphere was dreadful. Goals: Gibbo got the first, heading in after Bouanane's pinpoint cross. Aber equalised when Lewis’s deflected shot deceived Walsh in the Wrexham goal. Incident: Not much. Post-match verdict: Glyndwr Hughes looks a good prospect for the future. He reminds me of Connolly, with his exquisite turns and skill. Wrexham should snap him up before anyone else does. He still has a lot to learn, but I think that if Wrexham had him they could make him into a better player. Match ratings: Walsh 6, Roche 6, Hardy 6, Ridler 6, Carey 6, GIBSON 7, Barrett 5 (Thomas 6), Williams 6, Russell 5, Sam 5, Bouanane 6 (Blackwood 6). Man of the Match: Gibson.
