John Williams goes to London Road…

Watching Wrexham away can be very exciting. The last three games I have seen this year were the 4-3 win at Cambridge, the 2-2 draw at Northampton, and the fabulous 4-3 comeback win at Luton.

My previous visit to Peterborough was for the 4-2 win in the fourth round FA Cup tie during Wrexham’s dramatic 1996/7 cup run. I knew the bubble had to burst some time, so I had no great expectations for this season’s visit to London Road on December 2nd. The game and Wrexham’s performance did indeed turn out to be rather uninspiring and Wrexham were perhaps fortunate not to lose by more than 1–0.

Before the game I did a quick survey of most of the Wrexham fans that were sitting in the Main Stand. Most Red Passion readers had good things to say about the fanzine. One fan said 'Red Passion is good; they say it like it is.' I asked the fans where they had come from, as I was curious as to how many were 'Wrexiles' like myself. A few had travelled down from the Wrexham area but the majority came from various parts of East Anglia. There was even one other person from my small hometown of Bury St Edmunds, but he was a QPR fan who had come with a friend.

The away support on the day was very small but could have been even smaller because it included Craig Faulconbridge’s parents, Martyn Chalk’s sister and brother-in-law, Phil Hardy’s dad, and a couple of friends of Kevin Reeves. As I was sitting near to Mr & Mrs Faulconbridge I was diplomatic in my comments when a first-half shot by Craig ended up by the corner flag!

All in all it was a rather unexciting day. Even the train was on time. At least the beef and onion pie was hot and tasty.
