ANDY MARRIOTT
A huge favourite with the fans. Signed early in 1994 from Notts. Forest, Andy was a faithful, passionate member of the side until he was snapped up
by Sunderland in the summer of '98. A superb shot-stopper who was a saviour on so many occasions.
BARRY JONES
A free signing from Liverpool who was brought in to replace the departed Andy Thackeray prior to the '92/3 promotion year – a
season he was an ever-present in. He originally played at right back but later switched to a
central role after Mark McGregor pushed his way through the ranks. He finally lost his first-team place when Brian Carey was signed permanently.
Now at York City and a player who many Reds fans still have a great deal of respect for.
PHIL HARDY
What can you say? Came into the side at the age of 17 and has made the left-back spot his own for a whole
decade. Prior to that penalty last year, his only ever goal in competitive football had come in a penalty shoot-out
against Hull in a 1st round cup replay. Despite this fact, he has had a huge influence on the attack - mainly down to his understanding with Karl
Connolly.
BRIAN CAREY
After spending two loan spells at the club in the early-'90s from Man United, he finally signed a permanent deal in 1996, for
£300,000 from Leicester City. He has been a rock at the heart of Wrexham's defence and
despite losing a bit of pace he is still capable of turning in good displays – take the Middlesbrough match!
BARRY HUNTER
Signed from the Irish club Crusaders after impressing boss Brian Flynn in a
pre-season tournament in the Isle of Man. In his two seasons at Wrexham he became a Northern Ireland international, which was enough to impress Reading
who signed him for £300,000.
GARETH OWEN
Like Phil Hardy, Gareth came into the first team in his teens and kept his place throughout the decade. He has also been capped
for Wales at 'B' level.
DAVE BRAMMER
Came up through the youth ranks and established himself as a regular first- team fringe player by the time he was 20. Strong in the
tackle and with a fierce shot, Dave was your all-round midfielder. He departed the club when
he headed off to Port Vale for a fee that will total up to around £500,000. He is now captain at Vale and Carling
Opta stats determined him as one of the best midfielders in the game last season.
BRYAN HUGHES
'Yozza', despite being two years younger than Brammer, burst into the first team at around the same time. He was always full of
running, skilful, lively and always likely to get on the scoresheet. This was something that he did
six times in the famous cup run of '96-7. That cup run put Wrexham on the map and Hughes in the shop window. It was Trevor Francis who came in for him
and he signed for £1million. He is now playing, and scoring, regularly.
KARL CONNOLLY
Spotted playing Sunday League football for Liverpool side Napoli. He was quickly labelled 'God' at Wrexham and his flair
entertained Reds fans as he ran defenders ragged in the left-wing position in his younger days. When
switched to centre-forward he also delivered the goods without ever really having a successful partner.
GARY BENNETT
Signed from Chester, Wrexham fans soon forgave him for his past as his passion, determination and diving in the box, along with
his goals, took Wrexham up to the Second Division and made sure they remained there. Such a
committed player is always a good character to have at the club and 'Psycho' fitted that bill entirely. Went to Tranmere for £300,000 but was a bit of a
flop before heading off to Preston, then Chester, where he still never really lived up to his reputation.
STEVE WATKIN
The perfect partner for Bennett. His 'holding up' qualities allowed Bennett to do all the fancy stuff but Steve's contribution certainly
didn't go unnoticed. He scored the winner in that famous cup tie against Arsenal and
was Wrexham's top league goalscorer in the league in '91-2 and the '92-3 promotion season. Left when Dean Spink arrived – Spink cost £75,000 while
Watkin gained us £105,000. Who got the best deal? Now at Swansea and still doing the business!
SUBS
MARK MORRIS: A hero in the promotion season.
TONY HUMES: Quite simply a bargain from Ipswich.
WAYNNE PHILLIPS: Loyal, one of few Welshmen at the club.
? NEIL WAINWRIGHT: Only played a few games before signing for Sunderland for £350,000.
JOHN PASKIN: 'Supersub' was always as likely to come on and score as anyone starting the match.
