The A-Z of Life - G is for Glut, Ground and Gate
G, with Oldham fresh in the memory, is for GLUT - a glut of goals that went the wrong way. G is also for GROUND and for GATE.
When Wrexham were in the Third Division (North) the Racecourse was considered to be way ahead of
other clubs' grounds in the same league - and fit for internationals. Then, as the years went by, we got left behind, but the new stand has given the
Racecourse a 21st Century look. It was in fact a look through the gate at the side of the Turf that I
remember best in the 1950s: running from school to see a Wednesday-afternoon match and arriving half an hour from the end to look through the gate. We
could see the ball when it was in the air and the linesman raise his flag near the corner spot, but most of what was happening on
the field was confusing. Thankfully, with a quarter of an hour to go, the gates opened to
let people out - and in us schoolboys ran. Gates open - and gates close. That's life.
