The letter 'H' reminds me that football is a game of Halves…and what comes in between can sometimes be even more exciting than what is happening on the field of play: kiddies' games of soccer, eating and drinking, latest score flashes…

This is also true of radio commentaries. Recently I was travelling on a dark, lonely road with Radio 5 for company. I switched on in the middle of a football match. It was obviously an interview with a soccer star, but it sounded different. Instead of the usual jargon and cliches - 'over the moon', 'sick as a parrot' etc - there was courtesy, modesty, a sense of wonder and even the mention of 'Mr Erickson'. 

It turned out to be Chris Powell of Charlton and England and I think he maybe someone to watch in the second Half of his football career. But who's the Happiest footballer at the moment? The man from Rhyl - or the man from Wycombe who scored the winner against Leicester?
