Arfon: King of the Reds
Elsie Price salutes her hero
Over the years Arfon Griffiths wore the No.9, 7 and 11 shirts for Wrexham. It was always thought by many fans that he covered every inch of the pitch during 90 minutes of the match. He was a fighter who never gave up. It was also his job to take penalty kicks. Arfon never played international football until he was about 36! I remember him playing at Wembley for Wales - and he had a fantastic match. I also remember Arfon bringing his No.11 shirt for my young sister and a birthday card for her 6th birthday because my Mum happened to mention to Joey Jones that all she wanted for her birthday was Arfon’s shirt. He just turned up at our house on the day of her birthday - but she was in school and missed him! Arfon became manager and he expected the same high standards from his team that he set himself when he was a player. My favourite Reds team of all time would always have Arfon in it. I feel privileged to have been around at the time Arfon played for Wrexham.
