New Season - Early Doors...

Top of the table

After just five games, Brentford are the surprise early package in the division and their top spot is thanks mainly to the goalscoring feats of midfield playmaker Paul Evans. Colchester are another shock team sitting nicely in second place on equal points, although the Us have played a game more than the Bees.

New boys

The relegated teams have had very indifferent starts to the season. Lou Macari's Huddersfield look to be challenging to bounce back immediately - level on points with both Brentford and Colchester, they've had a good enough start to the campaign. QPR are one of six teams on eight points in mid-table, having won two, drawn two and lost two. Dave Watson's Tranmere have had more of a nervy start to the season, with just one win under their belt. Out of the promoted clubs, Cardiff and Brighton have got off to flyers. Eighth and sixth respectively, their young striking starlets, Earnshaw and Zamora, already look more than capable of cutting it at a higher level. Blackpool's Ormerod has also been banging in the goals of late, with the Seasiders well clear of relegation - after six matches. Chesterfield have got off to a very iffy start - still no wins after six games, despite picking up three draws. They have looked a bit better of late, having only conceded four goals in their last five games - it couldn't get any worse after a 6-3 home defeat to Colchester on the opening day.

Wrong end

Cambridge currently prop up the table on just two points, and the five teams above them all only have three points to their name. Wrexham and Bournemouth sit just above the drop zone, both still without a win. Chesterfield are also searching for a victory, while Bury and Northampton have at least managed to pick up three points in one match.

Top scorers

Bristol City's Tony Thorpe's opening-day hat-trick meant he started how he means to go on. Thorpe, Colchester's McGleish, who is striking up a good partnership with Rapley, and Brentford's free-scoring midfielder Evans are leading the way with five league goals apiece. Overall, ex-Wrexham loan signing Allsopp tops the table, having bagged three goals in both the league and the cup. Blackpool's Ormerod and Brighton's Zamora also each have five in all competitions.
