M is for Mandate, in order to pay tribute to Ken Aston, who has died aged 86. In 1966 he introduced the red and yellow cards into football as a way of conveying orders. How many words, I wonder, has he saved in over 30 years by the effectiveness of these colour signals? Our new manager also has a Mandate to pull the team out of the doldrums. A few weeks ago he was on the crest of a wave; let's hope for a good Cup run to cheer him up. �RP
