The phone rang. I picked it up, it was him, it was THE call. 'Hello Matt, about the manager's job…' I knew what was coming… 'You've got it'. I quickly put on my raincoat and left for Colliers Park to sort out my terms. Several days later, the phone rings again: 'Matt, it's about your terms…a subscription to Playboy is £26, and three Pot Noodles a week is about £6; we can't afford you, we've got a new man in. He's 'high profile' and only wants a TV Times subscription and a celebrations pack of Chocolates Monthly. We had to go for him, you know how it is…' So that's why I'm not in charge at the Racecourse and Denis Smith is. Oh, what could have been...
Well, as you guess I'm back, and hopefully I won't be going away again. My absence was self-inflicted. With marital duties taking up a lot of time, a new job and lots more DJing, I found myself with little time to write but I'm making time (providing RP will give me space inside its pages). So a lot has been going on recently. Denis' arrival - don't know what to make of that. I was backing Colin Lee myself, but we can't have it all. I wish Mr Smith the best of luck.
Hereford was a debâcle if ever I saw one. The Beeb got their giant-killing and we're out of the Cup, without a fight. I don't want my return
column to be negative because there's enough of that going on at the moment, but I see very little to draw happiness from. All I will say is we have to
keep the faith and keep our chins up. Not one supporter can abandon the club now, we all need to pull together, everyone can make a difference, even if it's just by shouting that little bit louder each day.
Not sure what's going on with Fergie at the moment - he seems very on/off. I hope it's just a dip in form and that he hasn't lost interest in the club. Does he see Smith's appointment and the many recent departures as a lack of ambition? I know many people do, it certainly seems that way. There needs to be a big overhaul at the club for anything to happen for the better. The
management was 'stale' but what about the boardroom? I want them all out, but who could take over? Would anyone want to? What I would give for a Sam Hammam now. I wonder if Richard Branson is free...I'll give him a ring and let you know what he says next issue. Until then...keep smiling and keep the faith (someone has to).
