Wrexham scrape home against Mansfield!
Hewitt goal gained the points
14 February 1953: Wrexham 1 Mansfield Town 0
About 6,000 Racecourse fans saw their side scrape once more to victory. A goal midway through the second half enabled them to do this, or else it would have been a draw and bang would go any more hopes of conquering the league leaders.
Many times did Hughes find his centres cut out by the unconquerable Wright who was the star of the Mansfield team.
He carried all the honours which the team had to be proud of. Tilston was playing at an unusual position for him of outside-left and was always without exception at sea.
Hughes was the star forward afield with Hewitt collecting the remaining honours if there be any. It was Hewitt who scored the only, but vital, goal of the match.
First-half misses were quite frequent by Tilston and Heggie who was never effective leading the attack.
The second half brought saves by Wright time and time again especially from Hewitt. Hughes was always alert and kept Wright on the move. Time and time hed carry through his shot but the Town goalie wasnt to be beaten.
Midway through this half, Capper who was star man in defence, sent Hughes sailing down the right wing. The wingers centre was a good one, Ron Hewitt cut in, shot,
Goalkeeper Wright saved, could not recover, Hewitt did so, and thanks to luck and a powerful shot he saw his kick give Wrexham two well earned points, but still they only scraped them.
