James Dean updates
us This is my new personal Football Enjoyment Index (FEI). The FEI measures my enjoyment of football at this stage in time, on a 1-100 index, increasing and decreasing according to events on and off the pitch at the Racecourse. I started at 50. If I reach 100, I am officially in football Nirvana. If I reach 1, I'll be willing to swap places with a Chester City fan. Picking up from where we left off last time, this covers the period between the Rushden away game on 21 September and the end of October. Starting score: |
63 | 63 |
| 2-2 draw with Rushden At the time, I was actually a little disappointed with this result, coming after three straight wins in which we'd scored ten and only conceded once. Looking at Rushden's home record in other matches this season, though, taking a point here has to be considered a big success. And if I'd been disappointed here, think how I'd have felt by the end of October! |
+1 | 64 |
| 2-2 draw with Bury Extending the streak to six games was fantastic, and worthy of +2, but I'm taking away 1 because if we'd finished with 11 men, we could have easily won the game, and put ourselves in a better frame of mind for the Everton game. |
+1 | 65 |
| Carlos red card
-3 A stupid, stupid action from Carlos, who more or less forced the ref to send him off. Very disappointing, considering how well he's been playing all season, and the results with him away made it even worse. |
-3 | 62 |
| First 80 minutes v Everton This was a trademark gritty performance from the lads in a cup match, but considering WHICH cup, it was absolutely incredible. I thought we held our own until the last 10 minutes, and if it hadn't been for a fantastic midfield display from Tie Li, we could well have been winning. |
+1 | 63 |
| Last 10 minutes v Everton Taking three off here just for the sheer disappointment of the scoreline, which nowhere near reflected the game. It's the second time this year (after Rochdale) that we've had a hammering which we didn't deserve, and I hope it'll be the last. |
-3 | 60 |
| Seeing Wayne Rooney Somewhat bizarre to add points for an opposition player who tore us apart, but does anyone doubt that this young lad is going to be something special very soon? He's on his way already, after scoring the winner against Arsenal, and at least all the Wrexham fans who witnessed the defeat to the Blues can take some solace in the fact they're some of the first people in the country to see a potential new star. |
+1 | 61 |
| Morrell's streak stops We all knew it couldn't last forever… but a dozen games would have been nice! While I was desperate to see Andy shatter Defoe's record for most consecutive games scored in, I'm more worried about the fact he hasn't got a goal in the seven matches since his great run ended. Here's hoping he finds his scoring touch again soon! |
-1 | 60 |
| 2-2 draw with Cambridge By all accounts, this was a game we should've won easily, and it was disappointing to concede two such late goals. More worryingly, it was the third league game from four that we failed to win. Admittedly, with hindsight, I think I was getting greedy when I thought six points from a possible 12 was bad! |
-1 | 59 |
| 0-0 draw with Leyton Orient First goalless draw of the season, first game in the league we'd failed to score in…Not to sound unduly pessimistic, but this could be where we decide our promotion challenge lost a lot of steam. The teams who'll finish at the top of this division are those who can grind out results against the teams who just try and spoil the game, and the Bury, Cambridge and Lincoln matches raised serious question marks as to whether we're one of them. Also: |
-2 | 57 |
| 4-3 loss to Hartlepool What a way to end an eight-game unbeaten streak in the league…Our defence is suddenly starting to look lightweight, and the score could've been a lot worse if it hadn't been for a mini-revival which sadly falls into the too-little-too-late category. |
-2 | 55 |
| 2-1 win over Huddersfield Despite our great run in the competition a few seasons ago, it's still a pleasant surprise to me when we manage to pick something up from an LDV game. Coming against higher-division opposition for our second 'giant-killing' of the season makes it even better. |
+3 | 58 |
| 2-0 loss to Lincoln This was DIRE. In fact, the second half of this game was so unbelievably painful to watch, it led to me leaving a game early for the first time in years. Shoddy, hapless, no punch - that was Lincoln, and we still couldn't beat them! |
-3 | 55 |
| Dan Bennett Easily the best player of the last month or so, the new citizen of Singapore has cemented his role as our top defender, looking far more able than the other two youngsters at the back. |
+2 | 57 |
| AS Adema 149 Stade Olympique l'Emyrne
(SOE) 0 Just as I was feeling depressed typing this out and realising how much worse than last time the final number's looking, this comes over the radio and cheers me up…In the above game on Halloween in the Madagascan First Division, last year's champions SOE suffered a bad refereeing call which incensed their wonderfully named manager, Ratsimandresy Ratsarazaka. In protest, he ordered his team to score own goals. And boy, did they listen! Sadly, I can't find a complete list of scorers anywhere, but at least it's a scoreline which I REALLY doubt Wrexham will be on the receiving end of this season! |
+1 | 58 |

On that note, we end the FEI for now, and the final total so far is... |
