Barry Horne

No. 2 – Barry Horne

Jackie Beedle interviews devout Huddersfield Town fan Ashley Almond about Reds’ ex-midfield terrier and skipper Barry Horne…

Q: What did Town fans think when Barry Horne was transferred to Town from Birmingham – what were their initial impressions?

A: ‘Personally I thought it was a good idea, but the majority of fans generally wondered why we were spending so much money on an old has-been.’

Q: What strengths does he have as a player?

A: ‘Well, he wins tackles and spreads the ball around the field.’

Q: What about his weaknesses?

A: ‘He doesn’t score many goals!’

Q: Do Town fans like him?

A: ‘Yes – he’s a popular player.’

Q: What do fans sing about him?

A: ‘“Barry, Barry, Barry Horne” – that has no particular tune to it; and also “Horny, Horny, Horny” – you know that song that was in the charts recently.’

Q: What’s been the highlight of his Town career to date?

A: ‘Keeping them up last season and scoring on August Bank Holiday Monday against Bristol City – brilliant!’

Q: Does he have any annoying habits as a player?

A: ‘Not really.’

Q: Which position does he play?

A: ‘Central midfield.’

Q: How does he fit into the team plan?

A: ‘He is very important to the team.’

Q: Do you think he deserved the new contract he signed given his age?

A: ‘Yes, because he’s very good.  In fact he should have signed a two-year contract in my opinion.’

Q: Have you ever seen him out and about in Huddersfield?

A: ‘Yes, I saw him the other week going into the Wellington pub with his wife.’

Q: Were you surprised to see him there, the Wellington is not a very trendy pub?

A: ‘No I wasn’t surprised, but nowt surprises me.’

Q: Have you heard any gossip about him?

A: ‘No, he is squeaky clean, whiter than white.’

Q: What is your overall, general view of him?

A: ‘I like him, he is a good player.’

Q: Do you have any stories, jokes, etc about him?

A: ‘I’ve not really heard anything about him, there’s definitely no jokes going about at the moment – now any other player I could tell you loads, but not Horney.  Except there is this thing about him having a degree. John Dyson and Tom Cowan have degrees as well and they are known as “The Three Degrees”.  The other thing is that him and David Phillips are called “The Old Gits”.   But apart from that there is not much to say about Barry Horne.’

Q: And finally, do you rate him?

A: ‘Yes, I rate him very highly. He’s what you call rateable.’
