LEAGUE LEADERS HOLD ON TO AN EVER-GROWING REPUTATION

Oldham Athletic 4 Wrexham 2

Boundary Park, 17 February 1953

Oldham’s lively centre-forward Gemmell was the star man in Athletic’s brilliant victory over Wrexham. George scored his 100th goal for Oldham in the first minute. He scored another - one in the 14th minute and when Ormond and then Clarke scored further goals Oldham went into the interval with a flattering three-goal lead.

Heggie, who was always a lively leader for Wrexham, scored a good goal just on half-time. Wrexham were much the superior in defence and sent Hughes sailing down the right wing. The winder’s centre was a good one. Ron Hewitt cut in, shot, and goalkeeper Wright saved and could not recover. Hewitt did so and thanks to luck and a powerful shot, he saw his kick give Wrexham two well earned points, but still they only scraped them.
