The Opposition - Luton Town |
| Luton started the season coming out of receivership and with former player Ricky Hill at the helm but his inexperience as a manager was exposed and he was eventually replaced by Joe Kinnear after the former Wimbledon manager left Oxford to join struggling Luton. But the writing has been on the wall for Luton as they have occupied a relegation spot since the ninth game of the season, and, apart from a run of games when Joe Kinnear took over in February, they seem destined for life in Division Three next season. A stark contrast from the beginning of the nineties when they were playing the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United in the then First Division. When the two teams met at Kenilworth Road in October no one could predict the events that unfolded on that Saturday afternoon when Wrexham came back from 3-0 down to score four goals to complete an remarkable comeback. Luton are still nine points away from safety and with their adverse goal difference compared to the other teams you can make that 10 points. Due to rearranged games Luton have had four matches on the bounce at home but their failure to win any of them, including a game against the league whipping boys Oxford, has almost ruled out any chance of survival. With only six games to go Joe Kinnear knows that time is running out fast and last week he set his side a target of winning six out of their last seven games to stand any chance of survival. With the home draw to Oldham on the weekend the game at The Racecourse on Easter Monday is a must win for The Hatters. |

Pre-Match Comments |
|
| Kevin Reeves: "Joe (Kinnear)'s done a really good job but maybe he has come in a little bit too late. If Luton had shown the same form all season as they have since Joe took charge they'd be nowhere near where they are. Every opponent from now until the end of the season has got something to play for, be it promotion or relegation, which will mean all our games will have a competitive edge." [Source: BBC News] | |
| Joe Kinnear: "Every game we go into now we need maximum points. I don't think Wrexham are having any problems but I'm more concerned with ourselves. I know Brian Flynn - he used to play for me in my first job at Doncaster Rovers - he was my captain. It's maximum points whoever we play - we've got to that stage where draws are no good to us." | Wrexham | Luton Town |
| Wrexham will be without Dave Ridler who completes a five-match suspension and striker Lee Trundle is still missing. That will mean the front two of Craig Faulconbridge and Andy Morrell will remain unchanged although Hector Sam will soon be back in contention after finally recovering from a hernia operation. Sam is expected to make his come back soon but he is not yet fit to make the first team. Brian Flynn may decide to give David Walsh his chance in goal after some outstanding displays for the under-21s has moved him ahead of Kristian Rogers in the pecking order. If Flynn does make the change it will not be against Kevin Dearden who has been outstanding this season but the Wrexham manager has hinted that he wanted to try one of his younger 'keepers before the season ends. Apart from that there is unlikely to be any drastic changes in defence where Mark McGregor and Brian Carey will continue in the centre with Lee Roche on the right and Phil Hardy on the left. Darren Ferguson and the inform Danny Williams are expected to continue in midfield but Brian Flynn has options on who he can play on the flanks. Robin Gibson should continue on the right but Carlos Edwards replaced him on Saturday late in the second half. That was the Trinidadian's first game back after injury and he may have to settle for a place on the bench again. Steve Thomas started his first game after returning from injury and Brian Flynn will have to decide on whether to continue with the unfortunate youngster or reinstate the experienced Kevin Russell on the left. | Manager Joe Kinnear has no new injury worries ahead of The Hatters' must win game at The Racecourse with an unchanged squad to choose from. Kinnear may change a few personnel with Paul McLaren expected to return to midfield after a spell in the defence. Kinnear's attempts to save Luton from relegation have been hampered with the number of players that have been missing with injury. Kinnear has already ruled out Matthew Spring and Keith Rowland for the trip to Wrexham. The Luton strikers have lost their form at the wrong time of the season and Kinnear will have to liven up his front two if Luton are to stand any chance of collecting a vital three points tomorrow. |

| Brian Flynn: "As a whole though, we didn't get going until the final five minutes really. We then produced some quality at the end, but I don't think we played as well as we have done in recent weeks, but we have won the game. There were occasions and flashes during the game when we did produce some quality, but not as often as we would like. As soon as we got some better movement and passing, I thought our play was generally better. I suppose you could say that 3-1 flattered us today. They were throwing men forward and wanted to win the game, taking more risks, which you would expect from a side in their position. We were counter attacking fairly well, but not having any end product. Our goals were good, with both centre-halves scoring and a right foot effort from Darren Ferguson at the end. That was good to see." |
| Joe Kinnear: "I was just talking to Alex Ferguson and he said the result didn't reflect the match. H e also said we were more than good enough to get a point and that I've got a real job on my hands to rebuild the side. I thought the result flattered them very much, but the last 10 minutes told and we shot ourselves in the foot yet again. We missed opportunities, didn't defend well on two set plays and we got punished for it. I don't think there was a forward on the pitch scored a goal. The two centre-halves scored for them, which was disappointing, and Ferguson from midfield. I thought there was nothing in the game. I thought we had slightly more possession than they did, and had opportunities to take advantage of it, especially in the first half. I was disappointed that we didn't come in in front at half time. |
| Brian Carey: It was a clash of heads just before half time, so I was looking to get it stitched and cleaned up ready for the second half. It was a little bit sore but nothing major, once it's strapped up it's alright and wasn't going to cause any problems, which turned out to be a lucky charm in the end. We got a little sloppy at times, but we are still working on it and things will improve. We got the win though and we are pleased with that. I didn't need to think twice about heading the ball in the second half and when Darren's corner came over I just went for it as I normally would." |
| David Walsh: "I don't think many people knew it was my league debut, so it was good to get it out of the way and do alright. I found out on Sunday and was delighted to be given the chance. Luton were a side desperate for points and for the first 20 minutes they threw everything into our box, but I was pleased with the way I dealt with that. As soon I was coming for crosses and taking them, I felt a lot more confident. Even that one I came for and missed, at least I still hit the man, which is what Joey wants, so it was good. The save at the end was like one I produced a York a week ago in the reserve league, which has all given me a lift. Obviously I was disappointed at conceding a goal, but with the cross going deep and then the header creeping through Kevin Russell's legs on the post, there was little I could with that. It was like the one against Peterborough, so there's not a lot you can do about that. Overall though I've come off and enjoyed it. We played better in the second half and to win was a great way to mark my first game. I was happy with my debut." |
