Match Report

Wrexham remain in the Football League relegation zone following the one goal defeat to local rivals Shrewsbury in an evenly contested game at the Racecourse.

Wrexham enjoyed the better of the game throughout but had no answer to Michael Symes winner in the fiftieth-ninth minute.

Despite Wrexham enjoying the better of the possession, it was Shrewsbury who had the clear cut chances throughout but this was a much better display than what had been served from a Wrexham side at home in the last month.

But despite the marked improvement in performance, Wrexham rarely threatened the Shrewsbury goal despite the change in formation to a conventional 4-4-2.

This meant Michael Carvill made a start in a Wrexham shirt despite not been seen for over a month and recent recruit, Matty Collins from Swansea, started in midfield alongside Robbie Garrett.

There was also a welcome return for Ryan Valentine at left back but there was again no place for defender Shaun Pejic who even failed to make the bench.

The first chance of the game came our way when Matty Collins arrowed wide from the edge of the area but it was Shrewsbury who should have opened the scoring when Neil Wainwright, the former Wrexham player, picked out Dave Hibbert inside of the area but he steered his header horribly wide.

Despite this early scare, Wrexham dominated the rest of the proceedings in the first half but it was Eifion Williams who came the closest to scoring when his twenty yard curling shot was tipped over the bar by Glyn Garner in the Shrewsbury goal.

Chris Llewellyn, who had a poor start to the game, took advantage of the early booking to his marker, Darren Moss, when he broke clear from the through ball from Eifion Williams but his well struck cross was turned over the bar by Neil Roberts.

Ryan Valentine was next to try his luck from long range but this was a much Wrexham could offer from their territorial advantage as we continued to dominate proceedings in the first half.

Shrewsbury did pick up as half time approached as they cut through the Wrexham defence down the right hand side but when the ball arrived at the feet of Dave Hibbert, the Shrewsbury striker got his shot horribly wrong and skied the ball into the hands of Anthony Williams.

Wrexham had lost the services of Mike Carvill towards the end of the first half and the winger was replaced by Matty Done whilst Shrewsbury replaced the booked Darren Moss with Ben Herd in time for the start of the second half.

Shrewsbury had a lot more purpose following the restart and almost opened the scoring when Steve Evans inadvertently flicked on a long throw that the back pedalling Anthony Williams tipped over the bar.

Shrewsbury continued to press home their advantage and opened the scoring just before the half hour mark when they took advantage of a lucky break off Steve Evans when the ball rebounded into the path of Michael Symes who calmly slotted home between the legs of Williams in the Wrexham goal.

Wrexham were clearly rocked by this goal and failed to exert any sustained pressure on the Shrewsbury goal.

The best we could muster came following a good run by Matty Done down the left and his low cross had picked out Marc Williams, who had replaced Neil Roberts, but his shot was blocked away by Glyn Garner and the Shrewsbury keeper reacted well to collect Robbie Garrett’s well struck rebound from the edge of the area.

Sadly, this was the best Wrexham could offer in reply despite the change to 4-3-3 when Michael Proctor replaced Chris Llewellyn with fifteen minutes left.

Wrexham resorted to long balls for the remainder of the game and this played into the hands of Shrewsbury who were comfortable in defending the balls forward as we resorted to this unproductive style of play.

Shrewsbury had time to extend their lead further when goal-scorer Michael Symes found himself in space inside of the Wrexham area but Steve Evans managed to cut out his centre to Hall who was in acres of space at the far post.

The Shrewsbury fans did not have to wait much longer for the full time whistle and they were soon celebrating their third successive victory at the Racecourse in as many years, as Wrexham extended their home run to three games without a game and a goal at a subdued Racecourse.

Match Reaction

Brian Carey: "I think that the first goal was always going to be vital and we had a spell where we shot ourselves in the foot again, and played into their hands if their hands, and conceded the goal. In trying to get ourselves back into the game, we started doing things that we are not good at. We got the ball forward too quickly in desperation to try and get a goal back and apart from chances for Marc (Williams) and Robbie (Garrett) that was about it in the second half. I think Shrewsbury probably did to us today what we did to them at the end of last season. The goal was a ricochet but the disappointing thing was the response. We tried to get the ball forward too quickly and didn't do what we did in the first half when we created more chances. We missed Mike Carvill when he went off. Matty Done came on and looked lively as did Marc but we are making it very, very difficult for ourselves at the moment." [Source: Wrexham FC - click here for more]

Gary Peters: "That was a big win for the supporters; these local derbies aren't just about 3-points it's about the fans. For so many of them to come and back us today and be so vocal they deserved that. I'm pleased for them as they deserve something back as we haven't been that good over the past few weeks and on top of that it was a good solid performance. We knew the win would come as we've got decent players who will get better over the season but let's just take the time to enjoy this win. There's no finer feeling on earth than winning a football game, I can assure you the feeling and satisfaction it gives you is superb until the next game. The supporters were brilliant today and if they can get their mates at the home games to do that it would be great, if they could get that atmosphere at the new stadium that would be great as we thrive on that sort of atmosphere."
