Match Report |
Wrexham progressed through to the second round of
the Carling Cup courtesy of a 5-3 penalty shoot out victory at League
One Port Vale.
Wrexham took a tenth minute lead despite their hosts starting in a
positive fashion but Michael Proctor opened his account for the season
after being set up from a high Danny Williams pass.
The lead was not to last the half as Luke Rodgers equalised from the
spot following a foul by Richard Hope but the introduction of Josh
Johnson as a second half substitute turned the game in Wrexham’s favour.
Despite the introduction of Johnson, Wrexham were unable to make the
vital breakthrough after dominating the whole of extra time but a five
out of five conversion rate in the shoot out was enough to seal victory.
Wrexham showed three changes from the weekend with Mark Jones and Eifion
Williams missing out through injury and they were replaced by Levi
Mackin and Matty Done respectively. The final change saw Michael Jones
take the place of Anthony Williams in goal with Williams dropping down
to the bench.
Port Vale started well with three early chances falling to former
Shrewsbury striker Luke Rodgers. The first came at the near post from a
low cross by Whittaker but Rodgers struck Jones with his initial shot
and his rebound went wide after striking the near post.
Rodgers then popped up on the other side of the box but this time put
his effort wide of the near post and we opened the scoring with out
first meaningful attack of the game in the tenth minute.
A high ball forward from Danny Williams was enough to open up the home
defence and after Michael Proctor gained control of the ball, he fired
low past Anyon from about ten yards out.
Vale lost the ball from the restart and this allowed Done to make a
surging run forward to the edge of the area but he was blocked before
getting his shot away.
Chris Llewellyn was then lucky not to see red after he clashed with full
back Jason Talbot but despite the referee consulting his linesman, he
only showed Llewellyn a yellow card for what lucked like an elbow on
Talbot.
In what was now an entertaining period to the game, Shane Tudor got the
better of Valentine down the Vale right and his cross dipped over Jones
and on top of the Wrexham cross bar before bouncing behind for a goal
kick.
Calum Willock then did Shaun Pejic for power and pace on the left
touchline before accelerating into the penalty area. The Wrexham defence
were now outnumbered but Tudor lost his composure upon receiving the
pass from the on loan Willock and fired rashly wide of the target.
Chris Llewellyn then tested keeper Anyon with a left footed shot from
the edge of the area after cutting in from his wing but Port Vale found
themselves back on level terms just after the half hour mark.
The equaliser came from the spot after Hope was correctly penalised for
climbing over Willock just inside of the area and Rodgers made no
mistake by firing low to Jones’ right who stood no chance in the Wrexham
goal.
The game fizzled out towards half time following the equaliser but there
was a frantic end to the half, started when Danny Williams went close
from long range and Chris Llewellyn could not get any purchase on Done’s
cross.
The final move of the half saw Craig Roacastle break the Wrexham offside
trap but he got his attempted chip over Jones horribly wrong and could
only find the hands of the Wrexham keeper.
Just like in the first half, the energetic Rodgers tested Jones with a
low shot following half time that the Wrexham keeper did well to keep
hold of and Proctor replied at the other end but his shot lacked any
power to really trouble Anyon.
The second half lacked any incident of note and Wrexham made the first
substitution with fifteen minutes left when Josh Johnson replaced
Michael Proctor up front.
Johnson had an instant impact by supporting Done down the left wing and
after turning two defenders inside out, Johnson delivered a perfect
cross for Llewellyn who saw his back post header blocked by Anyon.
The ball rebounded back to Llewellyn and his shot was this time blocked
by a home defender and appeals for a Wrexham penalty were turned away.
Both sides made changes before the game reached extra time with Marc
Williams replacing Neil Roberts and Conall Murtagh making his full debut
when he replaced Danny Williams in midfield.
There was still time for Rodgers to have one more chance for Vale but he
was denied by Michael Jones but there was only one team who looked
likely to reach round two as we dominated extra time.
Josh Johnson was the main catalyst and his pace gave Wrexham an added
dimension up front that Port Vale were struggling to deal with.
Johnson harried and dispossessed defender Keith Lowe before firing into
the side netting when he had Matty Done and Connal Murtagh free in the
box.
Matty Done then did well to break into the penalty area from Johnson's
clever pass and Marc
Williams was unable to get on the end of his low cross as the game
entered the final fifteen minutes.
Wrexham continued to dominate proceedings but struggled to manufacture
any decent chances but a perfect five in the shoot out was enough to see
us through.
The first seven penalties left both keepers with no chance with Ryan
Valentine, Simon Spender, Conall Murtagh and Matty Done converting for
Wrexham; Vale’s Danny Whitaker then struck the post and Chris Llewellyn
kept his composure to seal the 5-3 shoot out win. |

Match Reaction |
| Brian Carey: "This was a tough game throughout
and I think we have to say they shaded things in terms of chances. But I
thought for the first 20-25 minutes we were good value for money, but
then we started to do things we shouldn't have. At half time we go back
together and pushed them close in the second half - in the end I was
delighted with the outcome. We looked dangerous on the break, which we
were pleased about. Josh came on and caused them problems with his pace,
while the likes of Doney were in good form. With one eye on Saturday's
league game against Morecambe, we brought on all three substitutes, but
now we have squad which is capable of coping with that. While they were
young lads coming on, I'm also mindful of what they can do and they did
a good job for us tonight. Also in the starting line-up were Levi Mackin
and Michael Jones, which was good for them and they have come through a
big game like this, which is encouraging for them. The pair will only
benefit from the full 120 minutes and then the penalty shoot-out. We
have placed a great deal of emphasis on fitness during pre-season and I
think we had a quick return on that tonight, as I was very pleased in
the way we finished the game.2 [Source:

Foyle: "The game should have been dead
and buried in the first half. We had enough chances to win three or four
games but we couldn't stick the ball in the back of the net. The goal we
conceded was a poor goal. It was just hoofed from back to front and we
got caught a little bit - the communication between 'keeper and centre
half was poor - and the ball was in the back of the net. Then we settled
down and started playing some good stuff and got back into the game.
Again we had chance after chance but just couldn't kill it off. Once you
start going into extra time tired legs start to come into it and then
penalties are a farce. We had the luck last year and this year we
haven't had the luck." [Source:
