Match Report

Goals in each half from Drewe Broughton and Michael Proctor secured a welcome three points over Bury at the Racecourse.

Wrexham’s second victory of the week was not enough to see us climb of the foot of the table but the gap at the bottom has now reduced to four points after two of our rivals - Macclesfield and Mansfield - also collected three points.

Wrexham were under a lot of pressure in the first half with Bury forcing the majority of their twelve corners in the opening half hour and the first goal of the afternoon came when Sam Aiston broke clear from one of these set plays.

It was a box-to-box run from Aiston that was only halted with a save from Darren Randolph but Broughton was on hand to turn the ball in at the far post.

Wrexham could not hold on until half time and Bury grabbed a deserved equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time when Glynn Hurst was left unmarked to head home from a free kick.

The game was far more even in the second half and Wrexham had to wait until thirteen minutes from the end for the vital breakthrough when Stuart Nicholson flicked on Simon Spender’s low cross into the path of Michael Proctor who made it four goals in as many games with a quality finish.

Wrexham started with the 4-4-2 formation that worked well in the second half at Wycombe on Tuesday and there was only one change in personnel from the side that finished this game with Phil Bolland replacing Mike Williams in defence.

Wrexham had a couple of early efforts but Gareth Evans was off target from Paul Hall’s corner and Neil Taylor found the second tier of the away end with his long range effort.

The Wrexham defence had a nervous opening to the game when what looked like a routine catch for Gavin Ward turned into a Bury corner after Ward clashed with Evans as they both went for the same ball.

This lack of communication did not cost Wrexham but Bury continued to look the team most likely to score and it took fifteen minutes for the first real shot at goal.

This came the way of Bury when Nicky Adams was found in space on the edge of the area but his shot was deflected behind for another corner.

Bury opted for a deep cross and Gavin Ward had to punch the ball behind for another corner but this time the Wrexham defence cleared without any problems.

The only chances were coming from corners and this time Wrexham forced one of their own with twenty minutes gone but the Bury defence did well to block the initial header from Evans and then a shot from Chris Llewellyn after the ball dropped to him on the edge of the area.

A slip from Simon Spender allowed Nicky Adams to get past him inside of the area and Andy Bishop, Bury’s top scorer, looked odds on to score but Ward pulled off a good save.

More indecision in the Wrexham defence between Ward and Phil Bolland allowed Glynn Hurst to collect the ball down the right side of the area but Ward recovered the situation at the expense of another Bury corner.

Ironically, Wrexham broke upfield from this corner after Michael Proctor dispossessed Elliott Bennett on the edge of the area and Sam Aiston ran the ball from the edge of his own box, skipping past the final Bury defender and firing a shot that Randolph could only push into the path of Broughton to score.

It was a surging run from Aiston and if his strike had gone in, the Goal of the Season contest would be over now but Broughton showed good energy levels to keep up with Aiston and was rewarded with his first goal in a Wrexham shirt.

The goal came against the run of play and Bury responded with a shot from Bishop that went straight at Ward but the keeper was a full stretch later on in the half when he somehow tipped a shot from Bennett over the bar.

Wrexham lost the services of Carl Tremarco with four minutes of the half left to be replaced by Mike Williams and the replacement did at least nullify the threat of Bennett down the Bury right.

Good chest control from Broughton almost resulted in his second of the afternoon when his long range effort dropped onto the bar and almost embarrassed Randolph in the Shakers’ goal.

But Wrexham could not hold on until half time and in the third minute of injury time Aiston conceded a free kick that Brian Barry-Murphy swung into the box and Glynn Hurst was left unmarked to head in the equaliser with virtually the last touch of the half.

Wrexham were forced into a second change of the afternoon during the break after Neil Taylor failed to shake off a knock following a heavy first half challenge and he was replaced by Matty Done with Aiston moving into the centre of midfield.

The second half was far more even and Broughton had an early chance saved after Aiston and Hall combined down the Wrexham right.

Bury continued to threaten from corners and almost took the lead themselves when Efe Sodje headed the ball back to Nicky Adams but he scuffed his attempted volley wide of the Wrexham goal.

Michael Proctor did have the ball in the net for Wrexham but Broughton was standing in an offside position as he knocked the ball down for his strike partner and a linesman’s flag also denied Bury at the other end when Bishop found the back of the net.

Brian Little made his final change of the afternoon when Stuart Nicholson replaced Paul Hall and a minute later Wrexham were celebrating the winner with thirteen minutes left.

Simon Spender found space down the right wing and his low cross was turned into the path of Proctor by substitute Nicholson and Wrexham’s top scorer made no mistake with his low finish from ten yards out.

Wrexham had chances to extend our advantage in the final ten minutes when Aiston fired in a cross that almost went in at the near post and another breakaway from a Bury corner resulted in Proctor clean through on goal but he was unable to steer the ball inside of the far post.

Thankfully, lightning did not strike twice against Wrexham as the only goal threat from Bury in the three minutes of added time was a tame shot from Yeo that Ward saved easily.

Match Reaction

Brian Little: "I think that we had the better chances in the game but Gavin (Ward) has pulled off a couple of good saves, and I thought that we could have made it safe with a third at the end. It was not easy but the effort and the commitment was fantastic really. I think that you can't help but look at how other people are doing, that is human nature, and I think that it was absolutely vital that we won today. We are pleased with lots of things and while the result has been good for us, not many things went well for us today or indeed in the last week. In all fairness, we have had injury after injury and illness as well and now Carl (Tremarco) and Neil (Taylor) both going off was a massive blow for us. To have adjusted to that and to have got a result was fantastic." [Source: Wrexham FC - click here for more]

Alan Knill: "Until their second goal in the second half, it was pretty even and I don't think our keeper has had a save to make until he's picking it out of the back of his net.  I'm incredibly disappointed because I thought it was a chance for us to get three points today, but full credit to Wrexham, they take the points, but there are eight games left for us and I'm sure that they would rather be where we are." It's very disappointing, especially after the three wins.  You try to talk about complacency and that the fourth win is very important.  At times today we did well, but at other times, we didn't, especially in the last third where we had good possession.  That last ball that cuts them open and opens them up was pretty poor at times."
