Match Report |
Aston Villa cruised through to the
third round of the Carling Cup after a strong second half display from
the Premier League outfit left Wrexham on the wrong end of a five goal
trashing.
The first half was fairly even and only a superb Shaun Maloney strike
separated the sides at the interval but Villa punished Wrexham for every
mistake in the second half as they cruised through into round three.
Stefan Moore started the scoring after the break with a free header and
Nigel Reo-Coker made it three after beating Shaun Pejic in the
challenge. Maloney made if four but was aided by a mistake from Michael
Jones and Wrexham let a near post corner travel past three defenders for
Marlon Harewood to make it five.
Wrexham made five changes to the side that started at Bradford on the
weekend with Richard Hope, Danny Williams, Matty Done and Neil Roberts
not making the bench.
Brain Carey reverted to a 4-5-1 formation as Michael Jones, Steve Evans,
Mark Jones, Connall Murtagh and Eifion Williams made the starting line
up and it was Michael Proctor who was alone up front.
Wrexham made a positive start to the game with Eifion Williams skinning
Craig Gardner down the left and his cross picked out Chris Llewellyn at
the back post but Villa managed to scramble away the danger.
Villa responded through Barry’s inswinging corner on the right but Gary
Cahill headed over from close range.
There was still a good pace to the game and Wrexham threatened after
Llewellyn and Spender combined well down the right but it was Michael
Jones in the Wrexham goal who made the game’s first save.
The impressive Maloney had cut in from his wing and Jones was at full
stretch to turn his curling effort from the edge of the area around the
post for another Villa corner but Maloney was off target with his next
effort when he blazed over midway through the first half.
Our best chance of the half came from a free kick after Mark Jones was
fouled twenty yards from goal. For some reason, the free kick was taken
five yards further back but it caused Villa some problems after
Llewellyn’s effort took two deflections on its way until the away side
cleared from within their six yard box.
With Villa exerting more control on the game, it was the Premier League
side that opened the scoring just after the half hour mark following a
superb individual strike from Maloney.
Maloney had looked dangerous all game and after dancing past Spender on
the touchline, no Wrexham defender attempted to narrow down the angle
and he curled his twenty yard shot beyond Michael Jones and into the
bottom corner of the net.
Eifion Williams again got the better of Gardener down the left but
Proctor was unable to get on the end of his cross but Villa again
threatened and this time Ryan Valentine was forced to concede a corner
after Agbonlahor met Barry’s deep cross at the far post.
Villa fired a couple of warning shots before the break but Wrexham held
on and were still in the tie as they headed in a goal down at half time.
In a mirror image to the start of the game, Eifion Williams found
himself in space down the left but the under worked Taylor in the Villa
goal managed to block his effort after the Villa defenders has narrowed
down the shooting angle.
Villa responded almost immediately when Gardner’s shot clipped the top
of the bar and Harewood’s long range shot struck the far post with
Michael Jones well beaten.
Wrexham still continued to threaten and Eifion Williams picked out Chris
Llewellyn on the far side of the area and his first time volley was
parried behind for a corner by Taylor.
But Villa did not have to wait long for the second goal and they doubled
their advantage eight minutes following the restart when Luke Moore was
afforded a free header inside the box and he made no mistake by looping
the ball over Jones from Barry’s free kick.
Wrexham responded by replacing Connell Mutagh with Marc Williams and
adopted a 4-4-2 formation but the Villa defence still continued to enjoy
a comfortable evening.
Wrexham replaced Michael Proctor with Josh Johnson but Villa extended
their lead just after the hour mark when Reo-Cocker broke through the
challenge of Shaun Pejic before coolly slotting underneath the body of
Michael Jones in front of his celebrating supporters.
Villa then had appeals for a penalty turned down when Jones was forced
to rush off his line and dive at the feet of Agbonlahor but the young
Wrexham keeper should have done better with Murphy’s long range effort
after he let it slip under him for Villa’s fourth.
Wrexham were now gone and apart from a Steve Evans header that went over
we struggled to force Taylor into any saves.
Ryan Valentine, Wrexham’s captain for the night, deservedly ended up in
the book for a crunching challenge of Marlon Harewood but it was the
former West Ham striker who had the last laugh when he scored from close
range after Valentine, Pejic and Evans failed to clear a Maloney corner
at the near post.
Neil Taylor replaced Eifion Williams for his first full team start for
Wrexham but Maloney’s chance for the hat trick went begging when he
curled a long range free kick wide of the near post but the final
whistle came as a welcome relief for the Wrexham players. |

Match Reaction |
| Brian Carey: "In the end it was
a bit of a lesson for the players. The manner in which we conceded the
goals was something that won't happen again, I will make sure of that. I
am very disappointed for everybody who turned up tonight. It was
potentially a good occasion tonight and we did so well for a period in
the game, but I think that we just showed them too much respect in the
end. They have got good players, but we let them do what they wanted for
long periods and we paid dearly for it in the end. We looked at our most
dangerous when we got the ball out wide to Eifion on the left but we
know that he is capable of that. I thought that we did well for twenty
five minutes or half an hour. It was a weak effort for the first goal,
the second one was a set-piece and after that the goals that we conceded
were sickening. We did so well for long periods and tried to get back
into it but it backfired, it was a huge lesson for all of us."

Martin O'Neil:
"We played very well and the most important thing was to get the first
goal. Maloney was terrific for us all night. He scored a wonder goal and
I thought Osbourne was absolutely marvellous as well. We had some
excellent performances and there had to be because there was always the
danger of Wrexham breaking us down and getting a goal."
