Reds put on a super show to pick up the points

30/08/05

Paul WarhurstGREAT result, outstanding performance.

Wrexham showed just what they are capable of against newly promoted Barnet to pick up a well deserved three-points.

Denis Smith’s side turned in probably their best performance of the season to claim their second League Two victory.

The Reds caused plenty of problems when they attacked and the energy level shown by the players, who toiled until the end, was excellent.

All three goals – the first of which came after only 32 seconds – were well taken and it will have pleased Smith that three recent acquisitions, Paul Warhurst, Paul Linwood and Robbie Foy, all impressed.

Wrexham’s cause was helped by the fact that Barnet, unlike some teams who come to The Racecourse and stick 11 bodies behind the ball, had a go themselves.

The fact that they trailed so early meant they had to, but Wrexham took advantage of that and carved out a host of opportunities.

It could have been more in the end but three points were what was needed and you cannot fault the way it was achieved.

Whether Wrexham’s game at Lincoln goes ahead on Friday because of possible international call-ups remains to be seen, but Smith will be keen to build on this excellent show.

With six injured first teamers and two suspended, Smith was again forced to shuffle his pack.

But striker Jon Walters, who picked up a hamstring injury at Bury on Saturday, passed a pre-match fitness test to take his place in attack alongside on-loan Robbie Foy, but Lee McEvilly did not make it because of a re-occurrence of an ankle problem.

With Dave Bayliss suspended because of the red card he picked up at Gigg Lane, Andy Holt moved into the centre of defence allowing Alex Smith to take his place in the left wing back position.

And the substitutes bench had a youthful look about it with youngsters Matty Done, Mark Harris and Jamie Reed called up because Smith was without eight first team regulars.

Wrexham made a dream start by taking the lead after just 32 seconds – and Mark Jones played a starring role.

Right-wing back Paul Warhurst, making his home debut, found Jones who laid the ball off to Walters and although his shot was saved by Barnet keeper Scott Tynan, Wales under 21 international Jones was on hand to slot home from close range.

But Barnet hit back and Wrexham were indebted to keeper Michael Ingham forkeeping them in the lead when he parried a Dean Sinclair cross. Warhurst putting the loose ball out for a corner, and then the shot-stopper saved from Guliano Grazioli after Alex Smith failed to deal with an eighth minute centre from Adam Gross.

Jones, looking menacing when given the ball, did not have enough power on his 18th minute effort to trouble keeper Tynan after good work from skipper Darren Ferguson and Foy, but Wrexham were looking a handful on the attack.

And the Barnet defence was carved open again in the 24th minute when Jones,Ferguson and Danny Williams combined to put Smith through on goal, and although he scuffed his shot, the ball ran to Walters who was denied by Tynan.

Barnet immediately countered and Grazioli should have done better with just Ingham to beat but screwed his attempt wide, and the Reds’ keeper comfortably held the striker’s header on the half-hour mark.

Despite their opponents carving out opportunities of their own, Wrexham were keen to build on their lead, looking threatening on the attack, and they made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute.

A corner from Ferguson found Foy on the edge of the area and the striker’s deflected shot reached Warhurst who made no mistake with his low drive.

Wrexham continued to dominate with their crisp passing which Barnet struggled to cope with, and Jones’ long range rocket shot, after Foy’s cross was cleared, was only just over the bar.

The two-goal half-time advantage would have been fully deserved but centre-back Dennis Lawrence handed Barnet a lifeline in injury time when, nut-megged by Sinclair, he brought the player down in the area.

Hendon converted the penalty, which Ingham was desperately close to keepingout, and Wrexham had to settle for a 2-1 lead at the break.

It had been an excellent first half performance, and Wrexham continued to threaten after the interval, but Barnet battled back and came close when Sinclair blasted narrowly wide.

Wrexham still looked the more likely to score even though the visitors were keeping the Reds’ defence on their toes, and Foy made it 3-1 with 59 minutes on the clock.

Jones made time and space to thread a superb ball through for Foy who placed his shot into the top corner.

Barnet found themselves under the cosh as Wrexham continued to boss the game, but the visitors were still keen to push forward at every opportunity in an attempt to claw themselves back in the game.

In the 73rd minute Smith brought on Levi Mackin for the outstanding Jones, who had caused problems all afternoon for Barnet with his awareness and teasing runs, and the midfielder almost made an immediate impression.

Mackin, on stand-by for Wales under 21s forthcoming matches, met Smith’s cross and almost lobbed Tynan but the Barnet goalkeeper saved at full stretch.

Wrexham fought until the final whistle, were well worth their victory and thoroughly deserved the standing ovation from Reds’ supporters.
