WREXHAM’S
hopes of finishing second in the Pontins Holiday League West suffered a major
blow last night after they were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City.
The two sides meet again at Hyde tomorrow in what is the Dragons’ final match
and only three points will suffice for them to have any chance of runners-up
spot.
Wrexham had hoped to run the rule over trialist Samy Mafenwe, who has been with
Stafford Rangers, but the French midfielder’s international clearance did not
come through in time.
Joey Jones’ side put in a spirited first-half display, giving visiting keeper
Joe Clegg plenty to do. The City man denied Alex Darlington and Simon Spender,
while Jeff Whitley and Sam Aiston both went close.
But City took control with two goals in two minutes from Abdisalam Ibrahim and
Jack Redshaw. James Poole secured the points late on.
